Today I spoke with Lydia at the Contemporary.
She is eager for us to persevere, however she has made it clear that without attendance sufficient to pay the model, with something left over to pay the rent, we can't continue to meet at the Contemporary! I think that would be a shame, because there are many advantages to us in meeting there! It appears that there are 17 "views" in response to last night's message from me--BUT HOW THE HECK DO I ACCESS THEM? Help! I am going to go ahead to schedule a session for next Tuesday. I beg all of you who have any serious (or even semi-serious) interest in learning to draw to take advantage of the opportunity and come! It sounds as if we are likely to lose the space unless we can maintain an attendance of six or more people! If I hadn't turned up from nowhere this Tuesday, Her Coolness would have been alone with the model! What can I do to make the meetings more attractive? Don't hesitate to ask...anything...I want to keep these meetings going (and I am pretty resourceful)! Would you like to meet earlier or later? On Tuesdays or on another day? For three hours or for two hours? All quick sketches? Quick sketches to warm up followed by a 1.5 or 2.5 hour pose (with breaks, of course)? Only one long pose? A pose to be maintained over two weeks to make it possible to attempt a "finished" drawing? Note that most life drawing classes devote at least a week of half-days (15 hours) to attempting "finished" drawings (not that any are really finished at the end of 15 hours, but many look pretty impressive at that point). How 'bout if I bring a small chamber group to inspire us by playing some of the same music Diego Silva y Velazquez heard when he was painting the Infanta? Since I appear to be having trouble digging your responses out of this site, How 'bout sending a "reply" rather than a "view" ("replies" I can open) to assure me that you will be with us this coming Tuesday, and to express your preferences in response to the above questions and others which I have not asked? I'll keep you posted. I need you to keep me posted to know whether you will be with us! Thanks! --Jim Newberry |

Oh! Maybe "views" is just a count of the number of people who "viewed" the message I posted!
OK... ...Now you know about our situation: TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT IT ...and what you plan to do (about it)... SEND REPLIES!!!!!! Love and kisses, --Jim |

Hey Jim - I appreciate your working on keeping it live!
A couple of things that might make the confriming easier for me (a guy who's only come one time, so not a star pupil) is to post some details of the model earlier, so we know male/female/rough 'type' of model - (for instance the friday guys just metioned they have a military guy with costume this week)...and to confirm the meet is on for sure sooner than the day before...which I realize is catch 22 if the numbers arne't there for the fee. Is it possible to raise a 'warchest' so that a poorly attended night is covered by a slush fund? That might be unrealistic, but fundrasing from as high-end as an art show to as low-end as a bake sale is at least a consideration.... I still probably can't make it more than once or twice a month, just due to work schedule - but also if we simply had to pay more to make that a reality I'd consider it.... Also if there wasn't enought headcount to make this work, perhaps this night just has to merge with one of the other nights? For instance (no pressure here) if you want to go to long pose, that's what the friday group does exclusivley as well....(from my vast knowledge based on three time attendance...lol)... I'd also suggest a cheaper venue - I'd offer my home studio, but it's very far north, (frisco) so I'm sure that's not on for this group... anway, lets keep up the brainstorming.... ~m http://tarosan.wordpr... |

Hey Jim - I appreciate your working on keeping it live! Marc, Thanks for the response! I like many of your ideas. Time is so short and responses (so far) so few, that I'm not sure that any new measures can be taken to go into effect this coming Tuesday. I believe that a female model is scheduled (see The Cool One's post). I'll try to be in contact with her in time to confirm at this site. Please come Tuesday and bring friends! I went to your link. Your art is AWESOME! I would love to have an opportunity to sit down with you and examples of your work to quiz you about theory, etc. I hope to see you SOON! Best, --Jim |

I believe that a female model is scheduled (see The Cool One's post).
I don't want to speak for The Cool One, but I think something happened to the template for the Meetup sessions. They have all said something to the effect that you would be having a new model named Tabitha for the past couple of months now. I think Tabitha has already modeled for the group a couple of times now, so that would cease to make her "someone new." Only when The Cool One goes in to change each individual session does that vary. If you click on some of the future sessions, you will see what I mean. And I think that booking models now falls on your shoulders Jim... Dan |

I Like a mix on models, male and female, (maybe alternate it) all body types. Mainly I'm in it to learn the structure of the body so I like lean although obese is also fun to draw maybe alternate it, I like the fact that some one has been posting who the model is going to be.
I too have had the experience of being alone with the model and wondering if I would have to pony up and pay the full wack for the models time, as it turned out some one else show up and we just split it 20/20 and paid the model. Most times I'm there there is nothing left for the Contemporary. I'm one of those guys who likes to start with short poses 1 to 2 min and end up with doing 15 or 20 min for the last couple of poses. but I'm flexible to what the group wants. I wonder if we could advertise some how to get a bigger group? I think the lack of numbers might have something to do with not enough people knowing about it. There is a book, I don't recall the name but I could find out that a group can go through that is a set of lessons trying different drawing exercises. I was a part of a group that did this before and it was good because it gave some structure without a life drawing teacher. Just a thought. Maybe we have to do a "meet up", a meeting to get everyone together to talk about it. this group did start as a meet up. There are some good characters in this group and it would be a shame to have it dissolve due to lack of attendance. Ricky Richards |
